Maryland coach Brenda Frese confronts guard Oluchi Okananwa during NCAA tournament loss to North Carolina
Maryland Terrapins women's basketball head coach Brenda Frese, who has led the program since the 2002-03 season,[4] had an intense nose-to-nose exchange with guard Oluchi Okananwa on the sideline during a second-round NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament game on March 22, 2026, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
The Terrapins, the No. 5 seed, lost 74-66 to the No. 4 seed North Carolina Tar Heels at the Dean Smith Center.[1][2] The confrontation occurred in the third quarter after Okananwa committed a turnover, missed three free throws and a layup, leading Frese to substitute her out of the game.[1]
"I believe in you, but you got to want this moment," Frese told Okananwa.[1]
Okananwa, in her first season with Maryland after transferring from Duke following the 2023-24 and 2024-25 campaigns,[4][5] led the Terrapins with 21 points, six rebounds, two steals and six turnovers.[1] She averaged 17.7 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in the 2025-26 regular season and earned All-Big Ten honors.[1]
After the game, Okananwa expressed appreciation for Frese's coaching style. "Coach understands I’m a competitor at heart," she said. "I love to be coached hard. That’s what she does with me every single day."[1][3]
Frese, with a career record of 688-208,[1] described the moment as motivational. "We do, at times, have to have those tough conversations... The best of the best want to be coached hard," she said. Okananwa responded positively upon re-entering, scoring a basket and recording a steal.[1]
The loss eliminated Maryland from the tournament.
