Former Nebraska women's basketball coach admits sexual relationship with ex-player, lawsuit claims

Ex-Nebraska coach admits sex with player in deposition

Chuck Love, former associate head coach for the Nebraska women's basketball team, admitted in a February deposition to having a sexual relationship with ex-player Ashley Scoggin before her dismissal from the team in 2022, court filings state. Love initially denied the relationship. The admission came in a civil lawsuit Scoggin filed in 2024 against Love, head coach Amy Williams, former athletic director Trev Alberts and the university's Board of Regents.

Scoggin accused Love of taking a special interest in her that turned sexual, creating fear of retaliation if she refused. Teammates found her fully clothed in Love's room during a road trip, leading to her removal from the team days later. Nebraska suspended Love with pay the same day as Scoggin's dismissal and accepted his resignation three months later.

Scoggin, who played two seasons for the Cornhuskers after hailing from Dallas, Oregon, later transferred to UNLV. The lawsuit claims university officials failed to implement safeguards, rules or training to prevent staff sexual relationships with student-athletes. Williams and Alberts responded that they lacked sufficient information to admit or deny the relationship allegations.

The university stated Scoggin's team removal was justified due to dishonesty and distrust among teammates.
