They're special blocks which let us execute commands. subsection{The Command Block GUI} To get started with command blocks we need an texttt{op} user who can use them (see autoref{ch:permissions}). There's three text fields: begin{itemize} item The first field is where we type our command. item The second field lets us set how many times our command should run. item The third field lets us choose whether our command should run immediately or only when triggered. end{itemize} subsection{Executing Commands} To execute commands using command blocks we need power! For example: begin{figure}[H] centering includegraphics[width=0.6textwidth]{screenshots/redstone-repeater.png} caption{Powering our command block using redstone repeaters} label{fig:redstone-repeater} end{figure} When our command block is powered it will execute its command. subsection{Ticking} When Minecraft loads up it does not execute commands automatically. Instead it waits until something happens which causes commands to be run. This process is called ticking. Minecraft ticks every time there's an update or event which causes it to recalculate things such as: begin{itemize} item An entity moves or changes. item An entity dies. item An entity takes damage. item An entity gets hit by an arrow. item A player uses an item. item An item breaks off an entity. item An item hits another item or entity. item A mob spawns. item Something else happens which causes entities or blocks change state. end{itemize} When these events occur Minecraft goes through all chunks (32x32 areas) and performs calculations which determine how everything should look, where everything should be placed etc. During this process if there are any powered command blocks they will execute their commands. It's important that you don't cause too many events at once since this can cause lag! For example if you shoot arrows at hundreds of mobs all at once you may cause lag since every time one hits something an event occurs. Commands also cause events when they're executed! So if you run too many commands too quickly you may cause lag! There's no limit on how many times per tick commands can be executed but we should still try not to do anything which may cause lag. This means that we shouldn't use commands like: begin{minted}{java} /kill @e[type=!player] /tp @e[type=!player] ~ ~-100 ~ /summon lightning_bolt ~ ~10 ~ /summon zombie ~ ~1 ~ {CustomName:""Hello World!"" } which kill mobs/players teleport them far away summon lightning bolts etc. Instead we should use commands like: begin{minted}{java} /kill @e[type=!player,distance=..10] /tp @e[type=!player,distance=..10] ~ ~-1 ~ /summon lightning_bolt ~ ~10 ~ {Fuse:30} /summon zombie ~ ~1 ~ {CustomName:""Hello World!",CustomNameVisible:1b"} which kill mobs/players within ten blocks teleport them down one block summon lightning bolts after thirty ticks etc. We'll cover all these commands later so don't worry if you don't understand what they do right now! section{Ticking Delay} Command blocks have two modes: begin{enumerate} item Impulse mode (autoref{fig:impulse-mode}) executes its command once when powered then waits until it's powered again before executing its command again. This mode is useful when you want something happen only once when you trigger your command block e.g. spawning an item when someone steps on a pressure plate. It also means that you don't need any complex redstone circuits since your block only needs power once! However you won't be able use this mode if you want something happen continuously e.g. spawn mobs every second! To enable impulse mode simply uncheck ``Needs Redstone'' (autoref{fig:impulse-mode}). You can also disable impulse mode by checking ``Needs Redstone''. You cannot change between modes while your block is executing its command! You must wait until it finishes executing before changing modes! If you try changing between modes while your block executes its command nothing will happen! Your block will just keep executing its old command! If you want your block's mode change immediately then just uncheck ``Needs Redstone'' then check it again right afterwards! You may need multiple ticks between checks otherwise nothing will happen! When your block executes its command if it needs power then it'll automatically get powered by Minecraft! This means that if your block needs power but isn't powered when it executes its command then Minecraft will automatically give it power! If your block doesn't need power then it won't get powered automatically! If you don't want your block getting powered automatically then just check ``Needs Redstone'' before executing its command! When your block executes its command if it doesn't need power then it'll automatically unpower itself! This means that if your block doesn't need power but is powered when it executes its command then Minecraft will automatically remove power from it! If your block needs power then it won't unpower itself automatically! If you don't want your block unpowering itself automatically then just uncheck ``Needs Redstone'' before executing its command! When impulse mode executes its command if there's no output then nothing happens! However if there's output then: First all outputted items/entities etc. are placed out into the world according normal physics rules i.e. fall down etc.. Then all outputted entities are moved into unloaded chunks i.e. outside loaded chunks.. Then all outputted items are dropped on ground i.e. placed into air.. Finally all outputted entities/items/etc. are removed from world i.e. deleted.. This means that if there's output when impulse mode executes its command then all items/entities/etc. are placed into unloaded chunks/dropped onto ground/deleted.. If there's no output when impulse mode executes its command then nothing happens.. If you want your impulse mode execute repeatedly without outputting anything then use conditional chain mode instead.. If you want your impulse mode execute repeatedly while outputting things then use repeating chain mode instead.. item Repeating mode (autoref{fig:repeating-mode}) executes its command repeatedly while powered without needing any additional input (i.e. no redstone input needed). This means that once repeating mode gets powered up it'll continue executing its commands over and over again until either: It gets unpowed; Or it stops executing commands due to some other reason (see below). To enable repeating mode simply check ``Always Active'' (autoref{fig:repeating-mode}). You can also disable repeating mode by unchecking ``Always Active''. Repeating mode always needs power so there's no point powering/unpowering repeating mode using redstone components! You cannot change between modes while
